Important information, answers to frequently asked questions.

Eligible groups of people

Only members and affiliates of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn are eligible to participate in the university sports program:

  • Students (including former students)
  • Trainees
  • Employees*

* Employees of the University Hospital Bonn and of institutes and facilities affiliated or associated with the University of Bonn are also eligible to participate

Persons associated with the university can be admitted to university sports by the head of university sports. Admission is granted without legal entitlement within the scope of the available capacities. These include

  • Members of the Bonn Universit Society - Friends, Sponsors, Alumni e.V.
  • Second and guest students
  • Visiting academics
  • Students from other universities
  • Employees of the Studierendenwerk Bonn
  • Other eligible participants, in particular spouses of members and relatives of the University of Bonn (see above) and former employees of the University of Bonn

The allocation of these groups of persons to the tariff groups can be seen in the above overview.

Unfortunately, people without such a connection to the university cannot take part in university sports.

Observe the regulations on the statutory Accident insurance cover! There is statutory accident insurance cover for tariff groups 1 and 2 under certain conditions, but NO statutory accident insurance cover for tariff groups 3 and 4.

Participation in the sports program requires the purchase of a semester card. The semester card is valid for the specified period and the fee is staggered according to tariff groups.

The semester card is issued personally and must be carried with you each time you attend a course. It is not transferable. Misuse will result in exclusion from all sports events. A refund of the fee for the semester card is not possible.

The semester card is a booking requirement for all basic and additional university sports offers with the exception of the fitness center halle 5. It can be booked before the start of online course registration. Members of tariff group 4 require a University Sports participant ID card to book.

The semester card alone does not entitle you to participate in courses - a separate booking is required for each course!

Get the Semester card

In addition to the semester card, a booking is required for participation in all basic and additional courses. All basic courses can be booked at no extra cost. For courses from the additional offer, a fee must be paid when booking. This is staggered according to tariff groups.

The following rule applies to our fitness center halle 5: If you only want to train there, you only need a valid subscription for halle 5 and not a semester card. However, if you also use other university sports facilities, you will need a semester card for these.

The booking steps are shown in this PDF file:

Regestration for university sports.

In addition to the semester card and booking confirmation, proof of eligibility must be carried for each participation and presented to the staff and representatives of University Sports for inspection. The overview shows which proof of eligibility is accepted for the different groups of people.

Former students of the University of Bonn can register free of charge with the University of Bonn Alumni Network. In addition to numerous other benefits, they will then receive the alumni card.

Other eligible participants must have a participant card for university sports. This is a booking requirement for the semester card and all courses in tariff group 4 and can be applied for informally at the University Sports Office. It is necessary to provide proof of a connection to the university (see above) and to sign a declaration of participation for external participants. After successful verification, the participation card will be sent by post. The processing fee of 5 euros will be collected by direct debit. Therefore, in addition to the postal address, an account details (name and IBAN) must be provided.

The previously issued so-called external ID card (yellow ID card with photo) is no longer accepted. If you do not belong to one of the other groups of persons (especially former students of the University of Bonn), this must be exchanged for the new participant ID card.

  • Participation in university sports within the meaning of the administrative guidelines includes participation in sports courses and other university sports events as well as the use of sports facilities, equipment and facilities of university sports.

  • Participation in university sports requires admission (see above) and takes place within the framework of a contractual relationship under private law between the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the respective user.
Cost-covering fees are charged for participation in certain university sports events and for the use of certain university sports facilities and equipment.

  • The amount of the fees to be paid in each case as well as the payment and other contractual modalities are determined by the university sports program valid for the respective semester.

  • During participation in university sports, the student ID or proof of status or external ID in conjunction with an official photo ID and, if applicable, the semester card as well as proof of payment (participation ticket) for events subject to a fee must be carried and presented to the supervisory staff or the exercise instructor on request.

  • During participation in university sports, the instructions of the supervisory staff and the exercise instructors must be followed.

The complete regulations for participation can be found in the "Verwaltungsrichtlinien für den Hochschulsport der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn13161616" from 30.07.2008 and "Teilnahmebedingungen und Nutzungsordnungen Hochschulsport14171717".

How am I insured?

When participating in university sports, students at the University of Bonn are covered by statutory accident insurance under certain conditions (Section 2 (3) No. 8c of the Seventh Book of the German Social Code (SGB VII). The prerequisite is that the sports offered at the university have the character of an official university event or that the university sports are carried out by the university itself or a university-related institution (AStA) under the supervision of an appointed trainer.

Accident insurance cover includes the sporting exercises themselves, the necessary preparatory activities and the routes to and from the exercise venue. Free sporting activities outside of the organized exercise sessions on the university sports facilities (e.g. free play groups, free tennis, individual training in fitness studios) are not insured, nor is the practice of competitive sport in university or other sports clubs.

Employees of the university are only insured when participating in university sports if the special requirements of company sports are met (compensatory nature of the sport, regularity, company-related nature of the organization and the group of participants, no competitive sport). Accident-insured company sport is deemed to exist if the sport has a compensatory and non-competitive character, it takes place regularly, the group of participants is essentially limited to company employees, the exercise time and duration are related to the company activity in accordance with the compensatory purpose and the sport is organized in a company-related manner (http://www.unfallkasse-nrw.de/index.php?id=24215).

External (non-university) members of the sports centers are generally not insured.

What to do in an accident?

Students who have suffered an accident in the above-mentioned context, as well as all affected university facilities, are required to notify the university administration (Dept. 1.1 - Student Secretariat, Am Hof 1, 53113 Bonn, Tel.: 73-60045) of accidents immediately so that the legally required accident report can be forwarded to the responsible insurance authority (forms for students are available from the AStA Sports Department, the University Sports Office, at www.unfallkasse-nrw.de17 and the website of the Registrar's Office).

The accident report must be submitted within three days of the university becoming aware of the accident (see course catalog, accident insurance section). Exercise instructors in university sports are employed on a freelance basis and are therefore not covered by statutory accident insurance.

Exercise instructors and all other participants in university sports are recommended to take out private accident insurance. We would like to point out that suitable sports glasses are mandatory for spectacle wearers.

Mutual liability claims within the framework of University Sports at the University of Bonn can only arise in cases of intent and gross negligence. Any further liability for damages (e.g. theft of or damage to private property) on the part of the University Sports Organization and its employees is excluded. All participants and instructors of university sports are recommended to take out liability insurance to cover claims for personal injury and property damage by third parties.
